I knew I wanted to pursue tattooing in 2017, and I made that commitment the following year. I began experimenting with designs suitable for pre-drawn tattoos (known as “flash”) while working on Grimoire. The necessity to create designs suitable for skin defined my art style from this point onward.
My work as a teenager (2005-2010) was defined by my love of manga, anime, comics and sequential art. As my work matured during my time at art school (2008-2012), I gained a lot of inspiration from 2D and 3D folk art and textiles. Images from European illuminated manuscripts, Chinese atmospheric paintings, Japanese resist-dye textiles and woven raffia cloth of the Kuba people (Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo) became part of my visual language and an attempt to connect with my mixed Filipino and African-American heritage.
My work is identifiable by its subject matter - cute animals, objects, plants - and its aesthetic style, which evolved from intricate details to simplified lines and distinct fields of color. The purpose of this shift was to ensure my tattoos could remain visible and identifiable years after they are healed. Because of the nature of how ink heals in skin, I draw a lot of inspiration from American Traditional and Japanese styles, which use bold lines and bright colors.
Notably, my tiger motif was inspired by Korean Minhwa (folk art) and eventually led to the creation of the Tigerbob brand.

TZTTOO Collection
I was drawing a lot of tattoo flash with my iPad in 2021. These designs weren’t published as formal flash sheets, so I experimented with digital collectibles. The Tzttoo collection was published between May and October 2021.

SQUISHIN KITTIES! Collection
I wanted to take a break from drawing strictly for tattoos, so in April 2021 I started a digital collectible collection with variations of my tiger head. Notably, this project would inspire the design of the Tigerbob brand the following year.
Although these illustrations (and animations) were not designed for tattoos, I was able to tattoo two of the designs and this project helped me plan tattoos with color in new ways.

2019
I began publishing flash in May 2019. My first drawings were graphite on tracing paper. I started exploring color in August. I would print out my graphite drawings on cream paper and color them with colored pencil.
